Ask HN: Luddites in hackerdom?

1 pointsby nsmalchover 9 years ago
Is it possible to get so consumed in technology and the web that any attempt to make sane judgements about its future is always biased towards some sort of unholy AI race that ends up killing us all?
I feel this way lately about the web, and have been knee deep in hackery since I first pressed a key on a keyboard. But lately, my fascination is starting to wane, and it all looks very depressing. See this: http://fffff.at/
Make sure to listen to the Transmediale audio about losing the apparent 'war' hackers have with the NSA and how a bunch of hackers have literally "given up" their efforts of having fun on the net.
This narrative is all around us, but the hype of the web seems perpetuated by online services who are the only ones left in the game it seems, and are milking the net for all its worth before selling and finally being able to buy a Tsunami-prone piece of beachfront property in the Bahamas for their efforts.
What am I to do? Go Luddite and just delete everything and take up farming? I feel helpless.
