With a new generation of robots designed to work with humans on the way, a key issue in their adoption is the extent to which people would trust them - especially as much as a human doing the same task.
In that context, would you trust a robot to (you can choose whichever apply):
I wouldn't trust a robot that I haven't programmed myself.
Or, subsidiarily, whose software and firmware is free for inspection, modification and recompiling and installation by myself.
Exactly like any software or firmware.
Do you trust your toyota not to accelerate you in a wall? Do you trust your volkswagen not to lie to you about its killer polution?
Do you trust your microsoft windows system not to send all your private data to the NSA?
It is just immoral, and it should be illegal, to put anything on the market, without providing the software and firmware under a freedom license, so that everybody can validate it, modify it, compile it and re-install it, in short so that anybody can establish a chain of trust by themselves.
