Ask HN: Teaching programming to a complete newbie

3 pointsby bluesilver07over 8 years ago
One of my friends is currently between jobs and is free for a few months at least before he moves on to the next one. I suggested that he learn to make Android apps, as a hobby, or even a potential career switch. As he's completely new to programming, I thought I'd teach him a bit before suggesting online material. Any suggestions on how I can go about it? I'd prefer to start with C, but I don't think I have the time to go that route. I'm thinking of starting with Java directly, and then introducing Android programming before referring him to an online course. Any suggestions either on how to go about teaching, or on which online material to use would be much appreciated.
