Ask HN: Why is there not a DNS for phone numbers?

2 pointsby micah_chattover 8 years ago
We use DNS for emails, username@<dns>
Why not use DNS or have a dns-like system for phone numbers where an email or subdomain returns a phone number, similar to an IP address lookup?
Apple has already does something similar with FaceTime, but as far as I'm aware of it's not an open standard.
