Ask HN: Have major news outlet learned to game search engines?

1 pointsby trapperkeeper79about 8 years ago
In the old days (like .. a few months ago), I was able to google for articles and click them to see full stories. I suspect this was done so that articles would be indexed by Google. Increasingly, I find the text of articles show up for a second, and this is covered up by some pop up of sorts. Different sites are using different techniques. Now, I don&#x27;t really have time to look at the JS or CSS and get rid of the pop up - which is exactly the publisher&#x27;s intent.<p>Here is my quandry ... I want to continue to use Google and finding links that I cannot access is pointless. This reduces the value of Google to me and I suspect this is a wider problem. BTW, I&#x27;m not saying media outlets should not be able to restrict stories to their subscribers. I question if these should be top results in Google. Thoughts?
