Ask HN: Ensuring backup integrity in the face of ransomware

3 pointsby tonteldoosalmost 8 years ago
Good day fellow HNers,
Without this turning into a discussion about backup vs redundancy (and best practices), I was curious:
How do you ensure that your backup system does not get compromised by ransomware?
I know a fair few people who have external drives as 'backups', and have them connected to their computers on and off. At least one such instance resulted in most of my friend's external drive being encrypted by ransomware.
Related, but how do you prevent a connected NAS (via shared drives, for instance) from getting encrypted? In some instances, I expect a cloud storage solution might be subject to the same problem (if there is no version tracking present).
None of the above are ideal or perfect backup scenarios, but a LOT of people view this as viable, and it's absolutely better than nothing, especially for personal or SME use.
As always, thank you!
