Ask HN: Could state of the art AI summarize online forums?

1 pointsby 04robalmost 8 years ago
I've found that there is a ton of useful information that is pretty much only available deep in online forums. A few examples are in-depth audio/video product information in AVS Forum, car information in various make/model specific forums, etc.
A big barrier to getting at this information is the amount of time it takes to keep up with it all, especially when the information is buried in threads that can be hundreds (or thousands) of pages long, and where people frequently ask (and answer) the same questions over and over. Frequently these threads have a handful of authorities that frequently provide valuable information, and lots of other people coming and going requesting and consuming tidbits of info.
There has to be a better way to curate and/or organize this information.
Is AI in such a state that it could be useful in this area? Does anyone know of any existing projects?
I would love to be able to point a program at a thread (or an entire forum) and have it pull out and categorize all of the useful info.
