Ask HN: Do government's need to adhere to GDPR

1 pointsby brodalmost 7 years ago
Out of dozens of privacy policy updates which companies have been releasing I haven't seen a single one from my Government or Government services (Centrelink for example) - which got me thinking, does (and or should) GDPR apply to governments? I'm Australian but if I was a dual citizen (with the EU) could I request the Australian Government send me a copy of all the data they've collected on me?
The OIAC says it's complicated[1] and don't suggest individual agencies should seek their own legal advice.
[1] https://www.oaic.gov.au/agencies-and-organisations/faqs-for-agencies-orgs/government-agencies/does-the-eu-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr-apply-to-australian-government-agencies
