Why is Ruby syntax so popular?

2 pointsby parvenu74almost 7 years ago
It seems like every time a story about Crystal or Elixir is posted to HN there is a lot of interest. The two languages share one thing in common: adherence (to a greater or lesser degree) to Ruby-like syntax. What is it about Ruby's syntax that is so attractive to and popular with developers, more so than Python, BASIC, or C-style syntax?
