Ask HN: how to mod my x230 Lenovo bios myself to remove the WiFi card whitelist?

1 pointsby adetrestover 6 years ago
I have a Lenovo x230 that I love very dearly. It's the perfect mix of sobriety, reparability, low price, durability.
However, the WiFi is slow. So I put an ac card in it and flashed coreboot. The issue is that coreboot runs into trouble with most USB3 hard drive enclosures I have, where the Lenovo bios doesn't.
I'd like to revert to the Lenovo bios while the USB3 situation is problematic with coreboot, but to do that and keep using my aftermarket WiFi card, I need a modified bios that will skip the WiFi card whitelist check.
Now some users on the bios mod forums offer to do the mod for a fee, but I'd rather learn how to do it myself so I don't depend on others doing it for me every time there is a bios update. Unfortunately, there are no explanations I could find online on how to do it.
So, where would I start if I wanted to learn how do to it myself and share the method with others once I figured it out?
