Less money means less equity given to investors and more money for devs. That said, if the founder has wife and kids in the Bay Area, unless you want to live in a hole, you do need an income that may seem "high" for a 23 year old living with 3 other co-founders in some condo. Soo.. for a founder with a family in his early 30s, this is the ground reality. The question is, how will investors view a salary around 200K and is that something to be "concerned" about when breaking the subject?
