Ask HN: How to start a serverless meetup ?

3 pointsby amoloabout 6 years ago
I'm interested in starting a monthly or bimonthly meet up to help people get more familiar with serverless technologies back in my country (Kenya). 1. How did you get people to come around?
2. How do I make it more interactive
3. How to make it sustainable. Any tips, advice or suggestions you have are most welcome.

1. Post on the common websites: Meetup.com, Eventbrite, local sites.
2. Ensure there is time at the beginning and end for networking. If possible, have smaller breakout groups which can work on stuff together (rather than just listening to a speaker). For speakers, encourage interactive Q&A during the talk.
3. Ask local companies to sponsor you in exchange for putting their logo on your meetup invites, at your events, etc. Get your meetup members to pitch their companies on sponsoring. Companies that are recruiting software engineers for Serverless work are likely ones that would want to sponsor you.

To answer your questions:
1. Tap on existing networks. It could range from your first or second-degree contacts to sponsorship programs. Many companies, non-profits and open source organizations have programs which encourage community events. Look for one. Also, social media would be key to generate interest. Register on Meetup and create a Twitter page. If there are existing meetups in your vicinity, collaborate with them.
2. and 3. Interactivity and participation is key to sustainable community model and isn't just limited to event day. Try to generate some interest on social media (Meetup, Twitter) through a poster, questionnaires and announcements. During the event, allocate time for networking. Organizing an AMA can also help make things interactive.
Most importantly, involve folks who're interested enough to contribute to meetup organization. As you can guess, it can be a lot of work for a single person but will be a breeze when responsibilities are divided.
Last but not the least, have fun!
