Ask HN: How complicated is Snapchat's AR system?

1 pointsby chdanielover 5 years ago
Hi HN,
Non-technical founder here. I'm curious to get some opinions/information from someone with more experience in AR than I have (which is, likely, a lot of people)
How complicated is Snapchat's filters AR? As far as I can tell, the hard thing might be detecting the face — the puppy face/makeup thing would simply be 3D models that are applied.
And I understand that's a vage question. The context is: I'm thinking whether anything like that is possible around sneakers. Imagine someone points the camera at their feet and they can see a 3D modelled sneaker applied over what they wear. Just like in the Snapchat scenario, I suppose the big deal is recognizing feet/other sneakers.
Is this something a small team of devs might be able to do? Or is it something that requires advanced R&D? I'm also aware the AR kit was released by Apple in 2017, but I don't have any idea what that means
Thank you
