Ask HN: Options for Remote Work

1 pointsby PublicEnemy111almost 5 years ago
Like many of you, I'm a software engineer employed by a Bay Area company and I will not need to go back to the office for at least 9 months. I plan to live in the Bay Area once Covid has passed, but I'd like to use the prevalence of remote work to my advantage.
Ideally, I work and travel in either Southeast Asia or Europe. I think there are several considerations for this: 1) Working hours – This is not a concern for me. I stay up past 3am regularly. 2) Infrastructure - Need to ensure workable internet speeds. 3) Covid restrictions – I'm willing to quarantine in South Korea or Britain for 2 weeks. 4) Visa – I'm a US citizen only. Can I work for a California company on a travel visa? I would not conduct any business in-person while Im there (meetings, working from offices, etc). My company will not sponsor me without a legitimate business case. 5) Taxes – Not sure about this. I think this depends on what Visa I use and requires my company to have representation in the country.
Would love to hear from some folks that have tried this before or know their way around visas
