Ask HN: Does it make sense for new AAA games to charge top dollar?

Brand new AAA games often charge top dollar.
Does this make sense?
Wouldn’t they make sell more units by releasing at a lower price?

You can drop the price later. At launch, it's time to milk the fans who have to have it before everyone else. Johnny Tightwad can wait six months or a year if he wants a deal.

I'm sure if they are doing it, it makes some sense. All the die hard fans will just buy the game on day 1, regardless of price so why not milk them as much as possible? Do that for 2 or 3 months and then drop to a more acceptable price for the rest of the audience.
I dont think they're really losing any potential buyers by doing that.
