Canonical has always been getting a lot of hate because they are the biggest fish. When smaller distros switch things up or trade off flexibility for UX they are called "opinionated". When a big player does it all of a sudden it is the end of the world. You do not see Elementary OS getting this much vitriol. The complaints about Snap are hardly new. Linux people were crying and screaming when they updated the desktop environment and init system too. It is unrealistic to expect a both consumer and enterprise focused company to exist solely based on the needs of a few minority developers.
