I think a proper comparison needs to be made between Synology and one of the following:<p>FreeNAS - <a href="https://www.freenas.org/" rel="nofollow">https://www.freenas.org/</a><p>Unraid - <a href="https://unraid.net/" rel="nofollow">https://unraid.net/</a><p>OpenMediaVault - <a href="https://www.openmediavault.org/" rel="nofollow">https://www.openmediavault.org/</a><p>You also have: <a href="https://xpenology.org/" rel="nofollow">https://xpenology.org/</a>
Synology NAS has a lot of good things to mention. But there are two down sides:<p>* it’s closed source, a security concern<p>* the encryption is bad. There is even apparently a universal key (unless you opt for not using its key management system)<p><a href="https://blog.elcomsoft.com/2019/11/synology-nas-encryption-forensic-analysis-of-synology-nas-devices/" rel="nofollow">https://blog.elcomsoft.com/2019/11/synology-nas-encryption-f...</a>
From a quick look, Synology seems to be a proprietary [EDIT: not SaaS, just software]? I'll stick with Nextcloud, with which I am ethically aligned, thanks. [EDIT: point still applies. I'd prefer to use software that shares my values.]
