Who actually owns your DVD player?

1 pointsby eipimanalmost 17 years ago
A few days ago I became extremely annoyed while starting up the Shrek II DVD for my daughter, who is autistic and cannot operate the DVD player by herself. Some genius had decided that the owner of that particular DVD has no right to skip the previews.
At first I was mad at the makers of the DVD itself. Not only must I endure the usual and pointless anti-piracy threats, but now I can't even skip the previews??? But then it hit me that I was missing the bigger picture: my DVD player does not obey me. I tell it to skip the previews, and it does not. WHY NOT?
I could be wrong here, but it seems to me that the player can read the physical disk, so it should be able to advance the read head whenever I tell it to do so. But it doesn't, or won't. What's up with that? I would pay double for a DVD player that skips ANYTHING I tell it to skip, one that does what I, its owner, tells it to do. Is such a device available? If not, why not?
