What is to be made of “e” ending so many Middle English words?

When I was learning phonetics many, many years ago, I was taught that a final &quot;e&quot; made the preceding vowel long.<p>hat vs hate,<p>din vs dine, etc.<p>I suppose that convention developed later on.
