Ask HN: Page takeover ads on mainstream news sites

When did this become a thing. Obviously Ad-Blockers are limited in iOS safari but when this happens it’s an instant close and I never will visit your site again. Latest one was Newsweek. Straight to the garbage bin forever.

I use the No, Thanks extension to remove this crap. It&#x27;s a paid extension, but to me, that&#x27;s worth it. The usual ad blockers remove a lot of this stuff, but this extension even removes all sorts of annoying newsletter popups.<p><a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;www.no-thanks-extension.com&#x2F;" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;www.no-thanks-extension.com&#x2F;</a>

Also, ad loading causes the page to shift around all the time while you&#x27;re reading it. Many big sites have become unusable because of this.<p>I should point out WeTransfer here for doing the opposite. Their <i>background</i> ads are full screen, often video, and don&#x27;t distract from what you&#x27;re trying to do (upload a file). Nicely done.
