I was one of the naysayers, but I can't recall whether I thought a lack of interest or vandalism would kill it. I also recall feeling similar about OSM after having watched the founder(I think) give a talk about riding around on his bike(~2005).<p>Nowadays, I no longer own a paper encyclopedia or buy new paper maps. What absolutely indispensable one-hundred percent essential items will be largely gone alongside the 30 year anniversary?
One of the few “digital charities” I support through cash donations.<p>I think Wikipedia is part of the building blocks of the Internet and the last big organization staying true to the internet ideals of community, connectedness, infinite quality information.<p>I wish there was an equivalent search engine and browser (I don’t think Firefox is the beacon it once was since its incentives are to Google, not community).<p>At least we still have Wikipedia and Linux.
