I SpaceX is serious about transporting people across the globe using Starships, they have to offset the massive amount of CO2 released by those Raptor engines, otherwise they will inevitably face regulations and public backlash that could kill the project.
Also, the process required to create fuel on mars could probably benefit from better CO2 capture technology.
So it's really a win-win for him.
