I think that this should not be the solution. Rather, the solution should be to promote protocols which are simple, open, and decentralized (or decentralizable).<p>The problem is not that Twitter has terms of service, but rather, that they try to force everyone to use Twitter.
It is kind of funny that conservatives have been working to privatize every aspect of the 'public square' for decades, so that this very thing could happen--'public' spaces would be subject to corporate control, and therefore rights normally protected by the government could be constrained. This has been the project for decades now. Lax enforcement of antitriust regulations, siphoning public funds to private institutions, selling off public resources, etc, etc. Now they are crying when the result of their own ideology is biting them in the ass.
