How many of us have one display turned 90 degrees?
I personally began to appreciate vertical real estate with the SGI LCD made in the 90's. It was 1600x1024!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SGI_1600SW
My normal working CRT resolution was 1280x1024, and at first the more roomy display was a pleasure.
Then things just got tall, less dense...
Some programs were really impacted. The CAD program I used a ton went to a more dynamically created UI, and basically it would just stack all the stuff up and offer a scroll bar.
When we got cheaper LCD displays and running multiple ones became easier, flipping one to get some vertical working room was the first thing I did.
Today I carry one of those USB displays with my laptop. I use it in portrait mode far more than anything else.
If we were to crank overall UX density back up, we have plenty of pixels these days.
As things are?
Microsoft made a good call here.
