Ask HN: Will centralized or decentralized computing prevail?

3 pointsby dgskiabout 4 years ago
Something I think about often lately is the eventual shape of our computing ecosystem.
It seems we are currently in an interesting stage where the outcome is up in the air. On one side, we have the oligopoly of Big Tech, and on the other we have the hype/explosion of various decentralized technologies.
Decentralized technology has an uphill battle against the ergonomics of centralized platforms, however, it seems to appeal to some base human desires (privacy, autonomy and a variation of 'support indie/local').
I find my opinion to be very in flux. What are your thoughts?

Neither will "prevail" - each might steal ideas from the other, they're both good for different types of problems, I don't see it as a one thing has to win the whole market.
