I got to see Dick Hoyt while waiting for my friend at the top of Heartbreak Hill in Boston. My friend is a more than competent marathon runner (you have to be, to get into Boston), but Hoyt and his son came sailing over that hill a good 30 minutes ahead of my friend.
I didn't realize he was a full 30 years older than us. Damn. And he ran Ironmans, too... pulling his son in a boat for the swim leg.
A story I've heard: given that he was so strong, people suggested that he could win races if ran them for that goal.
His reply: "I don't run without my son".
