A common tale in Australian colonisation is death in the face of plenty: the colonists alienated the indigenous and were unable to ask, or be told, or accept the food around them.<p>Some of the things said in this piece go to the same place: they didn't adapt to inuit seafood methods. Odd, given the strong link to seafaring but cultures can be like that: Rick Stein often comments that you can't get fish and chips in a fisherman's cafe.

A good portion of Jared Diamond's Collapse covers the history and decline of the Greenland settlements. It's a worthwhile read.
