Ask HN: Too Late to Get into Cybersecurity?

1 pointsby elderKabout 4 years ago
Hey all,
I have an older friend that's considering getting into the computing field. In particular, he's interested in learning about and possibly pursuing a career in computer security.
He's concerned, however, as he's 48 years old and has little background in information technology.
For the past decade or so he's been running a small convenience store well enough to support himself and his family.
So, I ask you whether you think he has a chance at getting into the industry, given his age and background. Do you think it would be worth him getting a qualification in cybersecurity? Do you think he'd have much of a chance getting a job?
Thanks :)

There is a huge shortfall in cyber security worldwide. He might not be in the codespace but could be in other roles, its not like the only show in town is code. There's communications, training, analysis, data science, record keeping, LEA liaison, standards, compliance, you name it.
A degree is a 2-3 year commitment. Napier university in Edinburgh for instance.
A 48 yo has a life expectancy to 80 or better. There is another 20+ years of work life in him, if he wanted it.
