Ever since the MS acquisition GitHub really doubled down on outreach. It emphasizes why MS bought GitHub in the first place, direct access to engineers.
I didn't know about this, but this seems a win-win for all parties, including the students graduating: (1) Students get free GitHub swag (I remember how important this was in my poor student days) (2) Students who don't know how to create pull requests will learn to create one (3) A feel-good, fun graduation event (4) fun projects and events will likely come out of this.
I need to list (5) separately since it's more of a benefit for GitHub: more students (future developers) sign up to GitHub and create a new account, maybe start their first pull request, and possibly more commits in the future. But nevertheless, tis a brilliant outreach move.
Did not know GitHub did this. Here’s a summary of the 2020 edition:
https://github.blog/2020-06-16-welcoming-the-octograds-of-20...
