Australia is currently run by a conservative government and when it comes to energy generation, they are very much pro-coal and anti-renewable.
They are so pro-coal they actively argue aging coal fired plants can't be decommissioned and instead need to be refurbished so they can operate past their 'end of life' date.
Also one of their big arguments against renewable energy is their claim it isn't reliability and can't be made reliable.
It is somewhat ironic that one of those aging coal fired power plants has just brought down a large portion of the Queensland electricity grid.
