Dear HN-community,
I've recently started looking into the modern world of cloud-connected heart-rate/GPS/sports-watches.
While the available products from Coros, Garmin, Huawei, Polar, etc., are tempting, I've been appalled by the lack of focus on privacy-related concerns for consumers.
It seems to be so common, nowadays, that I would have to share all my personal data (heart rate, sleep records, location data, activities, etc.) with the manufacturer, and other third parties - even though GDPR et al. should provide for a voluntary opt-in, while still making reports available for offline / local use.
However, what I would wish for, is a watch, which I can configure, and use - preferably on device, but if so needed, on a mobile device / PC, without having to share my data.
Does anyone of you know of a privacy focused solution, which allows me to use such a device and export the data for further use (this includes the ability to install (official) firmware updates without forced sync to the manufacturer's servers?
