Just noticed that when I go to gmail.com, it now redirects to mail.google.com
What could be the reason for making this change?

Don't understand the point of this HN post. This has been the case since at least 2008. See: https://web.archive.org/web/20081001000000*/gmail.com

I have noticed that for years.
Also, if you have multiple accounts you can easily switch between them by changing the 0 in the URL to 1, 2, 99, ect...
Like this...
hxxps://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox
hxxps://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/#inbox
