I think this is mostly throwing out chaff for PR purposes:
1) They're not giving the money back, or better and less conflict-of-interesty, giving it to a neutral pro-foss org like FSFE
2) They continue to intimately support freenode
3) Fosshost directors remain as freenode staff but in a """personal""" capacity, despite being overruled unanimously by the fosshost non-director staff.
Nothing concrete has changed, the only thing they have done is roll back their desire to integrate more deeply.
Fosshost just announced that they have discontinued the previously announced partnership with freenode.
Previously:
Fosshost Enters Partnership with Freenode
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27366364
Freenode and Fosshost Partner to Empower FOSS
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27371829
