TikTok is targeted just because of the economic war against China. It is a very successful app by a Chinese company.
The "share data with Chinese state" is just a ruse to clip the wings of the Chinese and attack a popular Chinese app.
And a third of Britons took notice of that ruse.

> And a third of Britons aged between 18 and 34, the key demographic for the app, are more than just worried: they believe TikTok would hand over their data on request from China.
I guess that the hype around this 'recommendation algorithm' the TikTok fanatics keep talking about isn't any different to how any other social network operates since the app needs to send its data 'somewhere' for it to work for you.
I wouldn't be surprised if TikTok screws their users again [0] over this, just like how every other social media company has done as well. At this time, they need to make themselves 'presentable' for their IPO soon, so any concerns and findings are quickly 'denied'.
[0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27654481
