This is the dialogue, between Gus and his wife, that addresses the controversy surrounding the incident, during an argument between the two in 'The Right Stuff':
Mrs. Grissom: Look, I am finally Mrs. Honorable Astronaut. But they are treating me like I'm... Honorable Mrs. Squirming Hatch Blower.
Gus: I didn't do anything wrong! The hatch just blew! It was a glitch! It was a technical malfunction! Why in hell won't anyone believe me?
The film acknowledges the controversy, and that Gus maintained his innocence, without drawing any conclusions.
