Nice! Would have been nicer if they also included some of the unused spectrum just below and above 11 meters that some operators have been using illegitimately forever. There is enough room above and below for at least another 20 channels, perhaps 40 more. This change will cause people to step on each other with a modulation that existing radios can't understand, prompting people to buy new radios and that is exactly what Cobra and President Electronics were lobbying the FCC for. Still a good change in my opinion.
That's a long time coming. In the 80's in Chicago there was a black market for Mexican sourced CB's that used FM; landscapers and construction and tow truck guys that could have got licenses in smaller markets but had challenges (and were broke).<p>At the time I <i>know</i> there were at least a couple of people working at Motorola who railed about the FCC's pickled up attitude on this specifically, when properly intoxicated.
The general poor range of CB communications will be reduced using FM.
Advantages will be less perceived interference, based upon the "capture" of FM when it is being de-modulated.
Curious as to why this is "worth the trouble"
