I don't think we're running out of ideas, but rather that each new idea has less impact in a more differentiated economy.
Electric light, and to a lesser extent smartphones, affected every kind and size of business. Everyone used exactly the same invention.
With the focus where it is today (AI, say), it's hard to imagine exactly the same invention being used by everyone without extensive customisation work. A robot that can pick strawberries is not much use in a hair-dresser's salon or on a building site.
Autonomous road-going vehicles are probably the best hope for something that has an economy-wide impact. I'd love to be proven wrong, of course.
