Ask HN: Blogs/YouTube Channels on Cancer?

3 pointsby shubh2336over 3 years ago
Are there any blog/Youtube Channels on Cancer? My family is fighting this deadly disease & except a few bits of info here & there I'm struggling to gather a comprehensive set of information about this disease. Communication with doctors is another challenge where a bunch of medical terminology frequently comes up in the conversation which I've no clue about. I guess, oncologists in my part of world aren't that open to sharing information. My knowledge about Cancer is close to zero and I'm sure some of you must have navigated the world of medicines & thought of reaching out to this community.

Sorry to hear your are going through this. Here are a few I have found interesting. I am not a doctor and by no means is any of this something I am suggesting. It's just interesting content on your topic.
- Prof. Thomas Seyfried - 'Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: Implications for Novel Therapies' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06e-PwhmSq8
- A New Cancer Strategy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhmIACbPUNI
- The MOST Important Cancer Prevention https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBhD7N0qRbg
- Antiangiogenic Therapy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjkzfeJz66o
- Sulforaphane and Its Effects on Cancer, Mortality, Aging, Brain and Behavior, Heart Disease & More https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz4YVJ4aRfg
- Q&A with Dr. Jed Fahey on Sulforaphane, Moringa and Chemoprotection [An authoritative discussion!] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PNGxNzogOY
- https://jcto.weill.cornell.edu/open_clinical_trials/a-phase-...
Also watch this site if your doctors run out of ideas. Look for newer and more targeted methods. https://clinicaltrials.gov/
Some people that were written off by doctors had some success with prolonged fasting. Also important would be to get opinions by many doctors inside and outside of your medial group.

Perhaps read up on Cancer. The following website seems good enough for starters:
https://www.healthline.com/health/cancer

Internet is full of misinformation. From crackpot sites in allcaps with white text over a black background to very polished overhyped university press release with experimental treatments. Take all of them with a truckload of salt.
Start with some well known sources. I recommend:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cancer/sympto...
Then try to go deeper in the dark alleys of internet, but go with caution.
Some important points:
Cancer has a lot of variation. It's like putting all the viral illness in the same bag. A common cold is caused by a virus, ebola is caused by a virus, and there are a lot of other viral illnesses in between. Each one has a very different treatment and prognosis. Cancer is a very big bag of related illnesses, that may be very different. This comic is a good explanation about the problem with cancer http://phdcomics.com/comics.php?f=1162
In many case, the most important question is "primary or metastatic". Try to understand what this mean. Also a good comic about this is https://xkcd.com/931/ I think it's miss the cases where the first treatment is good for 5-10 years, and then it's possible to have a second treatment and get another 5-10 year, and if you are lucky get continue iterating.
