Ask HN: VPN for Traveling Abroad to Turkey

2 pointsby standcraftedover 3 years ago
Hello. I'll soon be traveling for work overseas to Istanbul for approx 1.5 months. In preparation, I was evaluating the need for a) a VPN and b) device for personal use.
I was wondering if anyone had any experiences they could share. Ultimately, what risks should I consider when using my personal device while in Turkey for casual streaming, social media, and banking?
My initial reviews of VPNs have provided in mix results. I understand many VPNs and domains are blocked. Will a VPN provide me any advantages?

I use https://mullvad.net on their wireguard without any issue: not that fast: so many IPs you can choose from
my advice: rent yourself a little server, and install wireguard yourself: very easy, very effective the cheapest https://www.hetzner.com/cloud will work perfectly
(you know yourself you need to setup your VPN *before* traveling)

If you will still have your home Internet just set up a VPN on your router's configuration page. It's really easy and I just used the router's factory firmware to do it.
