What are the benefits of a nuclear submarine force for Australia (Or Brazil for that matter)? Maintenance and operating costs are much higher, nuclear subs are less stealthy, and the primary benefit of long-term &#x27;anywhere&#x27; nuclear deterrence is irrelevant for a non-nuclear force like Australia.<p>As I understand it, the Australian Navy patrols a relatively small portion of the ocean near their home continent. Do they have any reason at all to need three-month patrol capability?
