Some research projects on GitHub do not say what they are about but just provide installation instructions. The GitHub repo is meant for the research group and collaborators, but it would not hurt to add a sentence at the beginning of the Readme.md saying what the project is about.
GitHub keywords should be used more often. If one's project is about solving the Navier-Stokes equations, add the "navier-stokes" keyword so that it shows up when searching topic:"navier-stokes".
