There is no flavor of free where reliability can drop to zero and still be attractive. People may lie to you - and themselves - about it being okay but once they get a taste for it they’ll keep trying to renegotiate for a little bit more.<p>If you come at this class of problems saying we are going to take a very small amount of resources, I think you’ll have better outcomes. Let’s say 5% of resources for control plane and a little bit of guaranteed forward progress. Any machine that can’t afford 5% can’t afford to have a freeloader running on it anyway. At least you’re being upfront about it.
