This should be a footnote whenever someone shows a Magic Quadrant defending their new vendor proposal.
It just isn't in me to accept a smattering of points in a field of "feelings" about how well a company is positioned to be a "Leader" in some poorly-defined field of industry from several years ago.
I've been in Video Conferencing for 10 years. Gartner offers so many candidate grids for different aspects of the industry that they allow enough room for people to forget how far off they were when they RetCon the Leader Grid for the actual leaders to float to the surface. What does that mean? There's a Video Conferencing MC, a Unified Communications MC, UCaaS, Web Conferencing, and I'm sure they snuck in one or two for other terms that seemed shiny but didn't take hold. Give a good Keynote? Get a blob on some new quadrant to take to your customers.
have a look:
https://msunified.net/2012/09/05/gartner-magic-quadrant-for-...
