Well I would like to point several things out.
IF Assange would be Chinese, he would have been shot or vanished using "reeducation camps".
Please don't forget that the SCMP is a newspaper owned by the CCP and unlike Western Media directly owned/controlled/influenced by its editors.<p>Yes, the handling of this situation is deplorable, but nothing is perfect.
This case is a good example of "Fuck with a bull and you get the horns.".
It does not matter if that bull claims to be a fascist in communist guise as is common in China or if this bull is of the Western persuasion.<p>This situation rings true with a quote from a philosopher.
"The East will not usurp the West when it is better, but when the West is at is worst"<p>Nothing against competition, but the situation in Beijing conjures up images of the 1930s with me.<p>//Edit: Please also note, that it hinges on a decision, do we treat Assange as a journalist, then, if he acted responsible, he should receive the protection of the law.
However, if this decision is not made in favor, then there is no protection and laws do apply. That, however, is a matter for another discussion. Together with prosecuting war crimes. We shouldn't conflate issues and keep a level head discussing and call out propaganda for what it is. Especially in the age of onmipresent misinformation and stoking of resentment in the nations not kind to dictators and fascist cuddly bears.
As pointed out by at least one British pundit, the founder of WikiLeaks would have been celebrated and hailed as a hero by the West, instead of facing extradition to the US. Unfortunately, he exposed Western, especially American crimes, rather than Chinese ones
