Ask HN: Are there jobs in Astronomy/Astrophysics for SWE?

1 pointsby xgbiover 3 years ago
Hi,
Are there real world jobs for experienced software/infra engineers in the astronomy/astrophysics field that pay correctly in France / Europe?
Anybody have experience on what kind of background in education is required for landing that kind of job?
I've been interested in that field since young and even took some actual post graduate introductory classes (Astro 101). I'm looking for a job that produces actual scientific value rather than just rat-racing along my coworkers.
Thanks to anybody that cares to chime in

A few, for example at L'Observatoire de Paris; these are generally research jobs so to start are on temporary contract. If the project you're working on gets funded then things can get permanent. Pay is not generally great, but the people are nice and the work is interesting.
https://www.observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/

I think the problem is pay - I remember looking in the US for similar employment and seeing very low wages for this sort of interesting work (probably connected :)).
