Ask HN: How to ship company laptops to remote team members abroad?

3 pointsby rkapsoroover 3 years ago
Hey, I work for an all-remote startup company.
We are based in Canada, but have team members abroad, namely in the UK, Poland, and now most recently Brazil.
We use Apple machines, but we've found that shipping company-owned work laptops to our team members abroad is troublesome.
The Apple Store (not even with a Business Account) cannot do this.
Note that we'd want to ship people the machines with the appropriate power adapter and keyboard localization, so just buying them locally and shipping them there isn't going to do the job either.
(I am well aware that this is almost certainly less of an issue with Thinkpad and Dell, but our product is Apple-specific and switching is not feasible.)
Perhaps some kind of global reseller?

Buy with the local Apple store/local reseller in the country you're looking at. Doing it 'globally' isn't going to work since you're hitting the person you're sending it to with VAT/GST/Import duties. That's in addition to power brick/keyboard, etc.
If you can't, still a better alternative is to fund/reimburse the purchase.

I'd look into giving each employee a budget to purchase the necessary equipment locally. What does your device provisioning entail?
