Interesting article, thanks for sharing.
Here's when reading on the phone works really well for me FWIW:
- Reading something I've already read or skimmed before, in order to go to sleep.
I don't tend to get distracted with this, because I know from experience that switching to other contexts will reduce my chance of getting to sleep. Plus I have a nice long list of books I enjoy ready to go.
This factor--not switching contexts--and the "already read before / stay away from new stuff" factor also help to lower the unwanted effects I can get with dopaminergic inputs: Reading news, reading new books, shopping online, posting on social media.
I find that this phone reading method works really well for reinforcement learning, especially with things like mechanistic systems study. It has been on my favorite activity list for something like 3 years now. I tend to skim early and come back to solidify what I've learned later.
So: I will continue to read on my phone--sometimes, and in specific ways. Just my subjective 2c.
