What do these people (like the twitter poster) think a protest is? It's supposed to be something people can't ignore.
The few that are loudly complaining about the protest appear to believe we should never speak up no matter how badly the government and our fellow citizens treat us. And instead of actually engaging with the subject of the protest - intrusive mandates and documentation requests - they would rather either complain about petty things like honking, or somehow imagine the government has lost control of the country because some truckers parked downtown for a few days. In any case, I think the freaking out by a select few we've seen over this is so ridiculous that it hopefully supports the trucker's case in the minds of normal people here
Officers say their strategy has been to defuse tensions, but critics say that other demonstrations, including those by Indigenous peoples, are often met with force.
“It’s OK if angry white men do it, because they are politically aligned with you, but it’s not OK if Indigenous people peacefully protect their own rights,” Indigenous lawyer and professor Pam Palmater told APTN News
Isn't this the purpose of a protest?
I mean how much better can it get? A peaceful protest by a portion of the population that feels wronged? Government for the people and all that
It is interesting to read individual perspectives. This one is firmly for the non-working-class establishment, but there are many others who say the exact opposite.
In the days when we still had a reliable press with actual reporters on the ground, we'd know more. Nowadays it comes down to one side displaying five people with a confederate flag and the other side displaying five people with a placard calling the truckers "stupid inbreds" (Trudeau won't complain about the latter).
A government has “lost control” to peaceful protest? I don’t know, and haven’t been following this closely, but it sounds kind of like… democracy working.
What I find really funny about this twitter thread is that there is an obvious solution, to the immediate problem; just get rid of the mandates.
Problem solved.
Except people have now learned they can stand up to “the man” in charge and win. Which might be why they’d let the insanity continue.
What was the rationale behind the mandatory vaccination of truckers ? They don’t seem to be a very high risk group, and the pandemic is now past the final wave. Seems like a strange policy to me
He is suggesting that the solution is to ask the intervention of the military. That's nuts! What about Trudeau admitting he made a mistake, saying he's sorry and asking everybody to go home? Unless he wants to fight his own citizens over his ideas using an army (which should not be used for this purpose).
There are two types of countries in the world... Those where people can assemble in the capitol and those where people cannot. In general, the former is better than the latter.
People have noticed that the way the current protest is being handled is rather different than previous ones. And how the Conservatives have forgotten their law and order speeches from 2020…. In the age of the internet, I’m sure these points will be endlessly reminded to them comes an election. Along with marketing and other aid being provided to them.
None of this, unfortunately, is surprising.
Things have never been better for me, but then again I don't live in Ottawa or Toronto. The constant horns (from these truckers in Ottawa suburbs) would suck, I'm surprised nobodys been killed over that, yet. Sleep deprivation ain't no joke.
Imagine how proud Pierre "just watch me" Trudeau must be, looking down on his son be so afraid of saying the wrong thing or hurting someone's feelings, that he is paralyzed into ineffectiveness.
Just do something, anything, and stand up for yourself. Just make sure you do it with the best interest of the nation in mind and the support will follow.
I don't love or hate any particular leader, but I definitely respect the ones that make confident choices in times of need.
