I don't consider myself to be a minority candidate (male, Indian), but I've found that looking for (happy) female engineers is a pretty good proxy for whether the workplace is welcoming or not. Whenever I've interviewed somewhere* and don't get to talk to a single woman or person of non-dominant culture through the course of my interview, hearing "we really care about hiring women, etc." makes me incredibly suspicious.<p>*This is in the before-times when in-person interviews happened.
