God I can relate to this. I was a sysadmin and then network engineer and thought "God I hate being in the field" so I took the technical manager role when it was offered. Worst. Mistake. Ever. I got what I wanted, I was no longer in the field, but instead I felt like I spent my days, weeks and months constantly dodging bullets. Not only are you getting blamed for things from your subordinates but from the upper management as well. I took it very personally until I realized I was the 3rd manager in that position in the last decade and that the environment was the problem. So yeah, I left pretty quick, renewed my certs and got another network position, this time in a nice, quiet NOC.
